Abstract

The aim of the present work was the obtention of AISI M2 high-speed steel by spray forming technique and to carry out performance evaluation as machining tool. The spray formed material was hot rolled at 50% and 72% thickness reduction ratios. Inserts for machining tests were manufactured from this material. The performance of spray formed material inserts was compared to inserts obtained by conventional casting and powder metallurgy techniques. The spray formed material and the others were mechanical and microstructural characterised after quenching and tempering. For further characterisation, the materials were machining tested for performance evaluation under working conditions. The results of material characterisation highlight the potential of the spray forming technique in the obtention of materials with good characteristics and suitable mechanical properties. Under the current processing, hot rolling and heat treatments condition, the analysis of the results of the machining tests pointed out a very similar behaviour among the tested materials.
