Abstract

Samples of filter cloth made up of polyamide were exposed to industrial plant work conditions for different periods of time and to specific conditions, aiming to determine the influence of some of the chemical components of the ore slurry on the reduction of the useful life of the filter cloth. The samples were investigated using Raman spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with the purpose to detect changes in the chemical structure of the polymer. The results show that the polyamide degradation was caused by the presence of Ca++ ions in the water, which competes with the hydrogen bonds of the polymer via coordination with the oxygen atom of the polyamide carbonyl. In these sites, where the Ca++ ions interact with the molecule, weak points are created in the polymer structure reducing its physical strength and, as a consequence, the filter cloth lifetime.
