A nitretação aumentou significativamente a resistência à erosão.

Abstract

ABNT 8550 steel samples were heat treated by quenching and tempering at 890°/640ºC and annealed at 890ºC. These samples were plasma nitrided and tested in respect to its erosion and corrosion-erosion resistance by using substitute sea water with sand particles. The wear tests were carried out in a test rig specially developed for this purpose, where a jet of sea water with sand is impinged against the test specimen. The impingement velocity was 15 m/s at angles of 30° a 90º and the sand concentration 6%. All tests were performed at room temperature. In order to measure the synergic effects between corrosion and erosion, pure erosion and corrosion tests were done. The wear mechanisms were evaluated with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and laser interferometry. The results showed that the steel microstructure did not have any significant effect on the corrosion-erosion performance and the wear mass lost at normal impingement was systematic lower than those at oblique ones, suggesting a ductile wear behavior. On the nitrided samples a fragile behavior was observed, where the white layer has a negative effect on the wear performance. After removal of this layer the wear was observed to be in the ductile mode. Despite of this the plasma nitriding increased substantially the corrosion-erosion resistance of the ABNT 8550 steel.
