Abstract

The pseudo-binary system Al2O3-MnO is important for modeling the thermodynamic properties of slags originated during the steel making in electric arc furnaces. In this system, the compound Al2MnO4 is the only double oxide present, so that the knowledge of its Gibbs energy is vital for achieving a quantitative description of the thermodynamic behavior of the mentioned system. In this context, due to the significant temperatures achieved during the slag formation in electric steel industry (typically higher than 1,273 K), it is expected that Al2MnO4 deviates from the stoichiometric behavior. The present work focuses on the construction of a Gibbs energy model for the spinel Al2MnO4 based on the compound energy formalism, but employing a recent developed function for describing the stoichiometric Al2MnO4 end-member. The final model is then applied for the assessment of thermodynamic and phase diagram data available for the system Al2O3 - MnO. The results support the congruent melting of the spinel and predict that there is a possibility of stabilizing Al+3 in its structure when in equilibrium with Al2O3. Such cationic disorder is a strong function of temperature. According to the present modeling, the equilibrium atomic fraction of Al+3 incorporated into the Al2MnO4 structure grows as temperature gets higher, so that at ambient temperature the stoichiometric behavior is expected.
