Research and development on the implementation of Beacon usage for automation of operational cycle data: a Proof of Concept in openpit mining
Emerson Machado Silva, Marcélio Prado Fontes
Abstract
This work presents a research and development project focused on automating the operational cycle at the niobium mine in Araxá, Minas Gerais, through the application of Beacon devices integrated with the electronic dispatch system. The research is characterized as an experimental study based on the Proof of Concept (PoC) methodology, in which a comparison between manual and automated records was conducted, with an emphasis on evaluating the reliability, standardization, and consistency of operational information. The results demonstrated significant improvements in data quality, including a reduction in errors associated with manual data entry and a decrease in variability resulting from human factors. Greater uniformity in records and a strengthening of performance indicators was also observed. Additionally, automation enabled improvements in real-time management through the use of dashboards and automated analyses, increasing both agility and accuracy in decision-making. The reduced need for manual interaction contributed to enhanced operational safety, allowing operators to focus more on critical activities. An evolution in organizational culture was also highlighted, with increased engagement, greater trust in data, and alignment with the principles of Mining 4.0. The results confirm the technical feasibility and strategic potential of applying Beacon technology as a tool for modernization and strengthening operational management in mining.
