Abstract

Spent Potliner (SPL) is an aluminum industry hazardous waste. SPL is formed by two fractions: carbon and refractory material. In Brazil the spent potliner is listed as hazardous waste according to NBR 10004, because it contains high amounts of cyanide complexes. The main objective of this work is to characterize and to study a method to treat SPL, mainly searching the destruction of cyanide compounds; cyanides are mostly contained in the carbon fraction of the waste. In this project Spent Potliner was treated in a Gasification-Combustion System (GCS) in a pilot scale (20 Kg/h). The GCS system is constituted of two sections. The first is a Gasification Reactor and the second is a Combustion Reactor. The feeding into the GCS was 1kg SPL/kg of wood. In the GCS system, cyanide destruction was approximately 99%. With the elimination of most part of cyanide compounds SPL could be treated as no hazardous waste.
