Abstract

The temporary protective oils and the oxidation processes can cause stains on the surface of zinc coated steels. These stains have a strong visual impact and cannot always be removed by the phosphatization pre-treatments. Because of this, the industrial application of these steels may be damaged. In order to investigate these effects laboratory simulations of the zinc layer staining were performed on electrogalvanized and hot dip galvanized steels, using the reactions with temporary protective oil and with atmospheric moisture during storage. Samples with and without stains were processed at an automotive painting line. It was observed that stains from the reaction with temporary protective oil do not affect the phosphate layer morphology and final appearance of the dry paint film. However, the stains due to the oxidation of the zinc layer affect the phosphate layer morphology and the final appearance of the dry paint film. It was also found that the oxidation of zinc layer can impair the corrosion resistance of the steel.
