Abstract

Peritectic steels show the highest surface defect index leading to irregularities along the shell during the continuous casting, that occur due to a difference of packing densities between ferrite delta and austenite phases after solidification. In the present paper, the influence of mould heat extraction on the peritectic reaction and, consequently, on the shrinkage of this steel during solidification was evaluated. For that, a methodology to evaluate the contraction of peritectic steels is proposed. Based on the results obtained, it is observed that the heat extraction may be a significant effect on the intensity of contraction of the peritectic steels. According to the results, higher heat extraction rates increase the intensity of the solidification shrinkage. This may be related to the kinetic of the peritectic reaction.
